Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment (RCT)

Root canal treatment aims to save teeth instead of extraction, ensuring they remain healthy, functional, and comfortable for years. This involves removing diseased tooth tissue, sealing root canals to prevent reinfection, and promoting overall oral health.

Root canal treatment is done by accessing root canals through the crown. The root canal system is then disinfected, sealed, and filled. The tooth is then built up with a filling or a crown.

While extraction might be the only option in certain cases, saving previously treated teeth with endodontic issues is often achievable, predictable, and conservative for the patient.

Endodontic Disease Symptoms

Common symptoms necessitating root canal treatment include:

  • Severe tooth pain alleviated by cold water
  • Worsening pain when lying down
  • Swelling
  • Persistent pain
  • Chewing discomfort
  • Referred pain to head/ears
  • Sensitivity to sweets

Without treatment advanced pulp infection can spread infection to surrounding tissues, leading to swelling. This infection might escalate, causing severe medical emergencies.

Root Canal Retreatment

Failing endodontically-treated teeth can often be successfully retreated due to advancements in techniques and technology. Factors like magnification glasses, ultrasonic devices, digital radiography, and better materials contribute to higher retreatment success rates.
